An open communication to all enjoyleisure customers

6th September 2022

As we all work towards full recovery from the pandemic and lockdowns, which will take some time, enjoyleisure like most other organisations is continuing to deal with the aftermath and the ongoing ever-changing pressure points.
enjoyleisure is no different from any other charity or business as we continue to experience unprecedented suppressed levels of applicants for vacant posts, COVID related absences, normal sickness absence, annual leave, supply chain issues and many other non-day-to-day matters.

Unfortunately, these are having an impact on our ability to provide all services, all of the time. We are presently having to respond to ever-changing circumstances on an hour by hour basis in an attempt to maintain normal opening hours as best we can.

This is not ideal but is part of our commitment to sustain as much normality as possible and I apologise to all our loyal patrons for the inconvenience this may cause.  Be assured that we are endeavouring to resolve these issues in new ways and quickly, however, in the present climate this is not without its challenges and I cannot pledge these issues will be resolved straightaway.

In spite of this, my promise to all customers adversely affected by late changes to our normal opening hours is that we are continuing to look at how we can adjust and provide service delivery without compromising safety.

I am delighted to say that all enjoy staff are consistently going the extra mile wherever they can to keep our amenities open to the public and I cannot thank every single colleague enough for their achievements thus far.
As a charitable organisation what has not diminished is our commitment to support as many people as possible to become and remain active. Through our provisions and programmes, we aim to support every individual within our communities to be more physically active, including people affected by ill health, poverty, debilities and inequalities. We will do everything in our power to help combat the effects of inactivity. This is the reason we exist - to improve our community’s health, physical and mental wellbeing and quality of life.

I can only ask for your understanding and patience during this challenging period. With your ongoing support and loyalty we can look forward to positively strengthening our communities for many years to come.

Yours sincerely

Bill Axon
Chief Executive

350 Years of Golf at Musselburgh Links, The Old Golf Course : 1672 - 2022

2nd March 2022

The Musselburgh Old Course Golf Club, enjoyleisure and East Lothian Council commemorate today’s 350th anniversary of golf being played on the historic Old Course.

March 2, 1672 is the earliest recorded date of golf having taken place at Musselburgh, which is recognised as one of the oldest courses in the world still played upon in its original state.

Documented evidence shows that Sir John Foulis of Ravelston, a prominent Edinburgh lawyer, played golf at Musselburgh on this day, 350 years ago, losing a match with his friends Gosford and Lyon.

Musselburgh later became home to some of the world’s first members' golf clubs, and between 1874 and 1889 hosted The Open on six occasions. Musselburgh is one of fourteen golf courses to have hosted the oldest golf championship in the world, which this year celebrates its own milestone with The 150th Open Championship being held at St Andrews in July.

To mark the 350th anniversary of golf at Musselburgh, MOCGC - which later this month celebrates the 40th year of its re-founding in 1982 - are hosting with a series of events across 2022, culminating in a gala dinner to be held in the town in September.

A Public Message from the Staff at enjoyleisure

20th January 2022

With January already heading towards it's close, and with more sunlight and warmth on it's way, enjoyleisure wishes everyone a healthy and happy 2022.
For any set new years resolutions just one more week and you're a month in! And for anyone that is looking to be more fit and active this year our centres across East Lothian are open 7 days a week to welcome you. Take a splash in the pool if you haven't for a while or perhaps dust off the cobwebs with a workout. However you feel we'll try to make sure there is something for you.

The last years have been challenging, and like many organisations, we continue to feel the impact of the pandemic in terms of sickness absence and self-isolation amongst our colleagues. This puts pressure on the high service levels we strive to maintain and means we have to make decisions at short notice, which may necessitate enjoyleisure to cancel some activities or close sites.  Where we need to do this we will endeavour to give as much notice as possible.

We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and would like to thank all of our customers and colleagues for patience and understanding of our position, as we continue through these uncertain times.
We also ask for your support. When using our services and we kindly ask that where possible you wear a face mask, use our hand sanitising stations and comply with Government advice on social distancing measures.

Statement from Chief Executive following First Minister's Announcement

21st December 2021

This afternoon the First Minister announced further restrictions to safeguard individuals against the latest Omicron variant of Coronavirus with effect from 26th December for a three week period.   While we await the specific details, it appears that the provision of non-professional indoor adult contact sporting activities is primarily affected.

Across enjoyleisure’s facilities, a minimum of 1m social distancing has remained in place to protect our customers and colleagues.  With regards to adult contact sports, this would appear to impact activities such as indoor football, rugby, hockey, martial arts and squash, however we await further clarification from government agencies.

Based on the statement earlier, we believe enjoyleisure can continue offering adult fitness activities; including access to the gym, swimming pool, health suite and fitness classes (albeit socially distanced), and our children’s activity programmes (swimming lessons, gymnastics, and access to soft play) will be able to resume in the new year as normal.

As East Lothian’s primary provider of community leisure, we understand that steps need to be taken to protect the general public, and we will do all that is necessary to implement safeguarding measures to protect our customers and colleagues.

We thank all of our customers and colleagues for your continued support.

Housebuilder Dandara Provides Boost to Leisure Facilities

Wednesday 19th June 2021

Housebuilder Dandara East Scotland is set to provide a boost to local leisure facilities by funding the cost of equipment to help improve facilities throughout East Lothian.  This support will allow enjoyleisure to invest in new leisure equipment, which especially benefit the county’s youngest residents.

Set to arrive in centres shortly is a set of brand new specialist gymnastics equipment to enhance and expand their existing gymnastics coached activity programme. The programme currently delivers lessons to over 600 children across the county. As well as providing much need replacement equipment, participants will also benefit from new apparatus to help develop their skills.

In addition, the support will also cover the cost of purchasing vital swimming pool platforms used in the delivery of the county’s Learn to Swim programme.   For younger children, entering water which is out of their depth can be very daunting, however these platforms, (which the children stand on), provide both an assurance and confidence boost as children learn this essential life skill – a necessity in this area given the county’s coastal location.

Cricket Update

Tuesday 18th May 2021

Much has been said on social media over the last week about cricket charges in East Lothian, however we feel some background context needs to be provided to present a more complete picture.

At enjoy our mandate is to provide sports, recreation and leisure facilities at fair and equitable prices across communities in East Lothian.  Added to this, we strive to ensure the ongoing viability of our facilities and continually seek to invest and improve our service offering so communities continue to benefit.

We take income generation seriously while ensuring there are minimal financial barriers to participation, so that everyone in our communities has the opportunity to use our facilities.

It should be noted that in terms of the current charges for cricket, that cricket clubs within East Lothian have been and remain heavily subsidised. Considering Tranent & Preston Village Cricket Club, an informal agreement has been in place since 2013, where the club received a reduced charge for use of the cricket pitch.  It is not viable for enjoy to continue this discount in perpetuity.  Instead, we are currently in discussion with local Cricket Clubs who have been invited to put forward their comments for inclusion in our intended cricket prices review.   This will include an appraisal of comparable cricket charges across the country.

Pending the outcome of the review, the current interim charge for all cricket clubs is £50.95 per session.  This is based on a 7-hour booking, equating to £7.28 per hour.  This represents a 3% increase of the fee for 2020/21, which was £49.45 which includes use of changing and showering facilities.

The proposed charge for 2021/22 is £68.60 pitch only, or, £81.90 including changing and showering facilities.  The higher rate equates to £11.70 per hour for a 7-hour session or £0.53 per head, per hour based on two teams of 11 players. These charges remain subsidised to support the continued development of cricket in East Lothian.

When reviewing our charges, enjoy must consider pitch hire, utility cost of pavilions, staffing and building checks.  To ensure the sustainability of community clubs, it is enjoy’s policy to absorb much of these costs, in partnership with East Lothian Council, is to encourage our communities to get active and stay active.   This policy applies to all activities offered by enjoy.

Bill Axon, enjoyleisure Chief Executive comments:

“Tuesday’s Scottish Government announcement confirming a move to Level 2 from Monday 17th May, is brilliant news for our many customers who attend coached classes and is greatly welcomed by everyone at enjoyleisure.  The resumption of group exercise; albeit socially distanced, is a massive boost to our customers and coaches alike; who like many others have been furloughed since Boxing Day.

enjoy’s fitness coaches are eager to return, and we can’t wait to have our halls and studios buzzing with excitement as adults of all ages return for their endorphin releasing boost!   The benefits of group exercise go way beyond the physical elements too.  enjoyleisure’s fitness classes are social affairs.   Friendships are created out of shared interests, motivation levels are enhanced by engaging instructors.  For many, it’s an opportunity for quality “me time”; to energise, relax or de-stress.  For some people it’s an opportunity for ‘real life’ contact (as opposed to virtual) with other people.  It’s important, and maybe even more so with it being Mental Health Awareness week, to recognise the positive social, mental and wellbeing aspects that come from ‘enjoying’ being part of group fitness activities.  It’s a win, win for everyone!”

Continuation of Zoom Classes

Thank you to everyone who completed our Zoom Fitness survey, following your feedback we are delighted to continue to deliver a number of classes over zoom from Monday 17th May onwards – see timetable for more details.

Going forward we will be monitoring all fitness classes on a regular basis and will be modifying and adapting the timetable in line with customer demand.
