Today, Thursday 18th December, a new mural celebrating sport and leisure in East Lothian has been officially unveiled at Musselburgh Sports Centre. The artwork, created by local artist James Drysdale, a member of Musselburgh Art Club, reflects movement in the Musselburgh and the wider East Lothian communities.
The mural, titled Active East Lothian, is located outside the sports hall at Musselburgh Sports Centre. It showcases themes of community and activity, with a particular focus on swimming and water sports, cycling and golf, with a nod to the Musselburgh Old Links Course, which is where Mary, Queen of Scots reputedly played in 1567.
Alongside James at the official unveiling were Miller Mathieson, Chair of the Enjoy Leisure Board; Lesley Sutherland, Vice-Chair of the Enjoy Leisure Board; Monica Hood, Chairperson of Musselburgh Art Club; Esther Peyton, Musselburgh Art Club Committee and Helen Johnston, Assistant Service Manager at Musselburgh Sports Centre, as they joined our visitors and members by adding their own mussel designs to the mural, making it a community effort!
Miller Mathieson, Chair of the Enjoy Leisure Board, said, “We’re extremely proud to have collaborated with Musselburgh Art Club to showcase the incredible talent of James Drysdale. His work has brightened our sports centre, thank you James.”
James Drysdale, artist, said, “The aim was always to make something for the community. Inviting people to add their own marks was a really enjoyable part of the process, and it helped the mural feel genuinely shared.”
Monica Hood, Chairperson of Musselburgh Art Club, said, “Musselburgh Art Club is very proud to have such a talented member such as James Drysdale designing, creating and painting such a wonderful mural. Well done James.”
