In support of RLSS UK’s national Drowning Prevention Week (14 – 21 June 2025), Enjoy Leisure, East Lothian’s health and wellbeing charity, has been preparing its swimming teachers across East Lothian to deliver lifesaving sessions to children in its Learn to Swim Programme.
Drowning Prevention Week aims to equip everybody across the UK and Ireland with the skills and knowledge to make the right decisions about water safety. Over 300 people accidentally drown in the UK and Ireland every year and many more suffer injury, sometimes life-changing, when they survive drowning.
Bill Axon, our Chief Executive said, “In a county like East Lothian, which is surrounded by extensive coastline, swimming is a vital skill. We’re extremely proud to have over 2,300 people currently in our learn to swim programme.
“We make sure our Drowning Prevention Week activities are fun and engaging for the children taking part. We ask them to bring along a t-shirt to class and they learn how to rescue their classmates, how to float and how to stay together as a group in the water. During the sessions, we emphasise key water safety steps: stop and think, stay together, call 999 and float.
“We’re always looking for ways to develop our Learn to Swim programme and right now we have flexible vacancies for swim teachers. If you’re interested, please visit the job section of our website for more details. It’s an extremely rewarding role – whether you’re just starting out or a more experienced teacher, we’re really keen to hear from you.”
