All eyes may have been on Murrayfield on Saturday 26th February, when Scotland took on France in the Six Nations. However little be known to many, another great clash between the two countries was underway in East Lothian, as the Scottish Parliament Rugby Club took on their French counterparts in their own clash at Meadowmill.
The friendly (yet highly competitive) game is played annually to coincide with the Six Nations event. This year as Scotland hosted France; Holyrood Rugby played host to XV Parlementaire – and with a last minute change of venue, headed east to take to the pitches at Meadowmill.
Holyrood Rugby Captain, Andrew Brown commented:
“These fixtures play a fundamental role in establishing relationships with our friends and neighbours across the Channel and strengthening the bond between Scotland and France. “It was a pleasure to welcome our French colleagues to Scotland and I’d like to offer my thanks to East Lothian Council and enjoyleisure for allowing our match to go ahead, after pitches in Edinburgh were deemed unplayable.”

Thanks to the established relationships between East Lothian Council, enjoyleisure and Holyrood Rugby team member, Councillor Lachlan Bruce, an alternative venue was found at enjoyleisure’s Meadowmill, and kick off commenced at 9am, with every amount of passion and patriotism as the national squads.
XV Parlementaire Captain, Député Sylvain Templier commented:
“I am very pleased and proud to have led the XV Parlementaire for this match. Both teams were valiant in their displays, with each side playing until the final whistle! “It was a great opportunity to strengthen the relationship between the Scottish and French parliaments and a fantastic way to raise money for charity. I wish to express my gratitude to East Lothian Council and enjoyleisure for stepping in at the last minute and welcoming us to the county.” Holyrood Rugby Captain, Andrew Brown concluded; “Whilst a 15-15 draw, with each side scoring three tries a piece, it was the most diplomatic result. We’ll be looking to go one better when we visit the XV Parlementaire in Paris next year!”

Bill Axon, Chief Executive of enjoyleisure adds;
“We were delighted to be able to offer our services and facilities to the Holyrood Rugby Team and welcome the French Parliament team to our beautiful county. We’re incredibly grateful for the positive comments passed on by both teams about the pitch and facilities, and to our colleagues who went the extra mile to accommodate this booking last minute. I am aware the score was a well-earned draw for both teams, which is a great result for all parties involved. As hosts we are absolutely delighted the two teams enjoyed their game on the well- regarded Meadowmill turf and hope they visit us again sometime in the future as they will always be welcome.”
