Torness Power Station fuels change with generous donation

16/01/25

Thanks to funding provided to Enjoy Leisure by EDF owned Torness Power Station, opportunities are being created to gain the internationally recognised National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ).

We’re extremely grateful for the donation, which has allowed the training and education of two individuals in the internationally recognised National Pool Lifeguard Qualification.

The NPLQ course trains and qualifies participants in all aspects of pool rescue techniques, lifeguarding theory, first aid, and CPR. The course stretches existing swimming abilities, ensuring participants can swim within set times, dive to the deepest parts of the pool, and pull and lift casualties out of the water. Being a confident swimmer is an absolute must for this certification.

The National Pool Lifeguard Qualification is an essential requirement for the role of a Leisure Assistant.

Bill Axon, our Chief Executive said, “A career within the leisure industry is attractive to many, and it is a fantastic way to give back to the community. Not only can it fit around your lifestyle, no two days are the same, and there’s plenty to get involved in. One of the minimum requirements for entry-level positions is the National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ). For many, especially young people, the fees of this course can be a significant expense.

“The funding from our partners at Torness Power Station creates opportunities for us to support candidates in gaining the qualification through the Fast Track Leisure Assistant initiative. Furthermore, it allows us to mentor these individuals throughout their NPLQ certification, giving them a significant boost toward launching their career in leisure.”

Station Director, Paul Forrest, said, “Safety is fundamental to everything we do at Torness so I am delighted we have been able to fund a scheme that supports safety at our local pools. This valuable scheme has great benefits, not just for the young people training, but for also those looking to go and enjoy the area’s leisure facilities. I wish those who have benefited from the funding all the very best for their future careers in the industry.”

We run NPLQ Training Courses through the year. Individuals interested in gaining a lifeguarding qualification or considering a career in leisure should visit the job section of our website.
