Move More Officially Launches in East Lothian

A new programme to help cancer patients in East Lothian become more active has officially launched today (Wednesday 19 February).

Macmillan Cancer Support has invested £120k over an initial 3 years to develop Move More East Lothian in partnership with enjoyleisure and East Lothian Council. The programme has been specifically designed for people affected by cancer and includes walking groups, gardening, gentle movement and circuits-based activity classes.

Helping people who have been diagnosed with cancer to ‘move more’ is a key focus for Macmillan. Extensive research has shown that being active during and after treatment is both safe and hugely beneficial and should be available to everyone with a diagnosis of cancer.

The activities, which are all free of charge, will not only help people cope with the side effects of treatment, but also provide an opportunity to meet others in a similar situation, build confidence and reduce the feelings of loneliness and isolation that a cancer diagnosis can bring.

Joanne Adamson, Macmillan Strategic Partnership Manager comments: “Traditionally people have been told that rest was best and while it is right to rest at certain times, it is also really beneficial to get moving too. Research shows that being active during and after treatment can not only help with the side effects but also reduce the loneliness and isolation many people feel.

“We realise people may feel nervous about building up their activity levels, particularly if it’s for the first time after treatment or if they haven’t been very active for a while, which is why Macmillan is working with enjoyleisure and East Lothian Council to provide this programme specifically for those affected by cancer.”

Shauna Cunningham, East Lothian Move More Coordinator comments, “Although today is the official launch day of More More East Lothian, the programme has been up and running since the middle of last year, and we are delighted to have participants enrolled in the programme here today to share their experiences.   They are all a true inspiration.  Everyone who is living with, or has had cancer in the past has a personal story to tell.

By bringing people together through the Move More programme they can enjoy the physical benefits of gentle exercise, but also have an opportunity to be in the company of others where they can share these experiences and provide support to others, in a way that only they can.  The mental benefits of these classes are just as important as the physical ones.

We are absolutely thrilled to have this programme running across East Lothian, and we encourage anyone who has been affected by cancer to get in touch.”

Move More East Lothian is available to people living with and beyond cancer.  To find out more contact Shauna Cunningham, 0131 6535264 or email
