2020 Swimming Pool Refurbishments

Press Release:  6th October 2020

Musselburgh & North Berwick Swimming Pools are set to receive an ‘uplifting’ modernisation as major works upgrades come to fruition to replace the unique ‘floating floor’ features at each of the town’s Sports Centres.

This exciting East Lothian Council capital investment project at the two facilities, which is being delivered in partnership with enjoyleisure, has been in discussion since late 2019 and was originally due to take place in late spring / early summer of 2020 – however due to COVID-19 this timetable was revised.

Throughout lockdown positive and regular discussions have been taking place between enjoyleisure, East Lothian Council and the appointed contractor, who specialises in the design, installation and maintenance of movable floors and bulkheads for swimming pools.

A 6 week programme of works has been outlined for each Swimming Pool.

  • Musselburgh Sports Centre’s Swimming Pool & Health Suite (only) will close to the public at 9:30pm on Friday 23rd October, with a conditional handover date of 4th December being scheduled to complete the works.

  • North Berwick Sports Centre’s Swimming Pool & Health Suite (only) will close to the public at 9:30pm on Friday 6th November, with a conditional handover date of 19th December being scheduled to complete the works.

Due to the complex nature of the works, and current pandemic environment, reopening dates for each of these facilities will be confirmed nearer the time, however, unless there are any unanticipated complications we are extremely optimistic these timings will be met.

Each centre’s six week schedule includes:

  • One week to drain the swimming pool.  (Unfortunately it’s not a simple as just pulling the plug.)
  • Two weeks of ‘dry-installation’ which includes the complete removal of the existing floor and boom and the installation of new equipment.  The boom and floating floor consists of a number of component parts, which need to be systematically removed and installed, including beams the full width of the swimming pool.  These will need to be carefully manoeuvred into place by removing some of the window panels from the pool hall.
  • Once the new boom and floating floors are in place, the pools will be slowly refilled and then raised to the correct temperature and chemical treatment levels.  This process takes approximately two weeks to complete.  As with draining the pool, significant consideration has to be made to allow for the pressure and temperature differentials to preserve the structure of the pool basin and tile infrastructure.
  • Once filled, the appointed contractor can conduct their final ‘wet installation’ work through the aid of divers to put the boom and floating floor into commission.

Fitness Memberships

While the pools are under refurbishment, direct debit fitness members and pay as you go customers are welcomed and encouraged to make use of the pool facilities at neighbouring county Sports Centres; Aubigny in Haddington, Loch Centre in Tranent, Mercat Gait in Prestonpans and Dunbar Leisure Pool.

Swimming Lessons

Swimming Lesson participants will have their monthly direct debits reduced to £1 per month, to allow members to continue to enjoy their free public swim benefit during the closure periods.
Discussions are also in place with local swimming clubs to accommodate their bookings in alternative enjoy facilities.

Chief Executive of enjoyleisure Bill Axon comments, “We fully appreciate the timing of these essential improvement works, after such a long period of COVID closures, is not perfect, nonetheless the long-term benefits should not be underestimated.”

“I can assure all of our customers that every effort is and will be made to limit the amount of disruption, so that we can resume pool activities as swiftly as possible.”

“As a leisure charity, our primary aim is to deliver numerous opportunities for the community at large to enjoy participating in leisure and fitness activities.  The replacement of the floating floors is a major undertaking, and it confirms both the commitment of enjoy and East Lothian Council in safeguarding the future and lifespan of both pools for the communities, as well as the economic benefits these facilities bring to Musselburgh & North Berwick for years to come.”

“All other areas of the Sports Centres; gyms, fitness studios, halls and reception areas will remain open for business as usual; with the appropriate physical distancing and safeguarding measures in place.”

“We once again, thank all of our customers for their continued devotion and support, especially at this time.  We are truly grateful.”
