2020 Golf is Back in Full (Social Distancing) Swing

It was the news that golfers across the county had been waiting for!

On Thursday 28th May, the First Minister confirmed that Scotland would be moving into the first phase out of lockdown, and that meant non-contact outdoor activities in local areas, including golf, could resume with appropriate social distancing measures in place.

Anticipating this announcement, enjoyleisure and East Lothian Council’s Amenity Services team, and their green-keeping staff ramped up their efforts to get both Musselburgh Links, The Old Course and Winterfield Golf Course, Dunbar ready to welcome customers from 8am on Friday 29th May.

Due to the exception work by the Green-keeping staff in maintaining the golf courses during lock-down, the greens and fairways were in immaculate condition, with some golfers even commenting, “It’s the best condition the course has ever been in!”

While the game itself has not changed, there are now a number of noticeable difference at the courses themselves as social distancing measure are put in place.

Bill Axon, Chief Executive of enjoyleisure explains, “The safety of customers and colleagues will always come first.  Over the last few months we have been constantly monitoring the latest Government advice surrounding COVID-19, and along with guidance issued by the Scottish Golf and the R&A, both courses have been adapted to comply with current social distancing policies.”

On the morning of Friday 29th May, you couldn’t have asked for better day.  The sun was beaming, the wind was practically non-existent, the courses were in spectacular condition and there were smiles all around … (until they stood up on the first tee!)

After two months of no golf, there were clearly a few apprehensions about being a bit stiff, their putting technique and the overall standard of their game, but it wasn’t long before they got into the swing of it!

Bill Axon added, “We’re delighted with the incredibly positive response that we’ve received from our golfing customers over the first weekend of opening.  Being able to provide opportunities for sporting activities in the community once again is an absolute joy.  However we are also very mindful of the current pandemic situation, and the role that we all play as individuals in adhering to the guidelines and social distancing restrictions that are in place.  To date, as we expected, all our customers have been very willing to comply.
