Learn to Swim Finalists

11th September 2018

Scottish Swimming have announced that enjoyleisure has been shortlisted as a finalist for the Scottish Water Learn to Swim Provider of the Year Award 2018.

Applications were submitted from Scottish Swimming affiliated Learn to Swim providers from across the country. Each applicant had to demonstrate: how their programme is structured, comprehensive and inclusive; connected to the local community; well promoted; and how the organisation supports its teacher development.

enjoyleisure launched their new Learn to Swim programme, ‘Get in the Swim’, in September 2017, introducing the new national framework in tandem with a direct debit membership scheme and rolling programme of lessons scheduled across 48 weeks of the year. At the time of launch, enjoyleisure had 1800 children enrolled in its programme, which has already expanded to include over 2000. The past year has seen a surge in demand, and the programme continues to expand at every possible opportunity.

The Learn to Swim Provider Award criteria assesses the activities undertaken by the provider in a wider community sense as well as via the national framework. Under these categories, enjoyleisure was able to make reference to their involvement in the delivery of the Schools Swimming Programme, the delivery of community Water Safety Events, the provision of adult lessons and its dedicated ASN swimming lesson programme. enjoyleisure also documented its role as a coach education provider, their position as chair of the East Lothian Swimming Clubs Forum and enjoyleisure’s recruitment, training and continuing professional development initiatives, as part of their application.

Bill Axon, General Manager comments, “We’re absolutely thrilled by Scottish Swimming’s recent announcement. This is an incredible achievement and a testament to the tireless efforts put in by our teams in each of our facilities on a weekly basis. In a coastal county such as ours, being able to swim is an essential life-skill. Our aquatic strategy aims to get as many people, both young and old to able to enjoy the benefits of swimming safely, whether for recreation or as a competitive sport.

enjoyleisure, along with the other finalists Glasgow Sport and Xcite West Lothian, now eagerly await the official announcement of the winner of the Award, which will take place on 29th September 2018.
