Latest Scottish Government Updates

Wednesday 17th March

Yesterday, Tues 16th March the First Minister provided a new timetable for lifting the current coronavirus restrictions.

Over the coming weeks, as we make our own preparations for reopening our facilities and resuming our services to you, enjoyleisure will confirm our official timeline for reopening.   At present, as far as possible we are working towards the "indicative dates” as outlined by the Scottish Government below.

5 April

  • The resumption of outdoor contact sport for 12-17 year olds

26 April

  • Reopening on indoor gyms and swimming pools for individual exercise

17 May

  • Resumption of adult outdoor contact sport
  • Indoor group exercises can restart (fitness classes)
  • Small scale indoor and outdoor events can resume subject to capacity constraints (to be confirmed following stakeholder engagement)

Commenting on the new indicative timescale enjoyleisure Chief Executive Bill Axon commented:

“Yesterday, Tuesday 16th March, local charitable health, wellbeing and leisure trust enjoyleisure eagerly awaited the latest updates from the First Minister.

Having now heard the details of a “firmer indicative timescale”, enjoyleisure’s senior and operational management teams across the county are preparing to bring back our valued colleagues from furlough, ahead of reopening our facilities to the public once again.

While we had anticipated the reopening of Sports Centres on 26th April, we are disappointed that not all of our services can resume on this date.   It will be a further 3 weeks before group exercise; one of our most popular activities; can resume indoors.  Longer for our children’s soft play facilities.  It has been an incredibly long winter and having been in this position once before, we are even more acutely aware of the physical, mental and wellbeing impact lockdown has had on our local population and communities.   Last year enjoyleisure was highly commended for the stringent social distancing & hygiene protocols put in place.  Some customers even commenting they felt safer in an enjoyleisure gym / class than at the supermarket.

As in 2020, our priority over the coming weeks will be to prepare and safeguard both our outdoor and indoor spaces; provide the necessary training updates for our colleagues, and ready our coached activity programmes in preparation for unlocking our doors.

Our primary focus, has always, and will continue to be providing opportunities for all ages and abilities to enjoy participating in physical activity safely.  We very much look forward to welcoming our customers back so they can relish the physical, health and wellbeing benefits that comes from enjoying leisure in East Lothian.”
